Frequently asked questions

Common questions

What is the difference between hourly pay and flat-rate pay for automotive technicians?

Flat-rate pay compensates technicians for the number of hours a job is booked at, regardless of how long it actually takes. A technician who beats the book time earns more per hour; one who runs over earns less. Hourly pay provides a consistent wage regardless of job timing, which reduces financial pressure and tends to support more thorough diagnostic work. Many experienced technicians prefer hourly environments for the stability and reduced incentive to rush.

Why do auto shops value computer documentation skills alongside mechanical ability?

Modern repair facilities rely on digital work orders, electronic parts ordering, and cloud-based vehicle history records. Technicians who can clearly document their diagnostic findings in writing allow the service team to communicate accurately with customers, build a reliable vehicle history, and provide defensible warranty records. Poor documentation creates gaps that lead to repeat repairs, customer disputes, and lost revenue. Shops increasingly treat it as a core professional skill.
