With frigid winter temperatures, many vehicle owners notice their car heaters aren't performing optimally or warming up as quickly as expected.
The heater uses heat that is generated during normal engine operation that causes the coolant or antifreeze to get hot. The radiator expels excess heat, while hot coolant is directed to the heater core. A water pump circulates a mixture of antifreeze and water through the engine, radiator, and heater core. Once heat is utilized, the coolant recirculates to absorb additional heat.
The heater core operates similarly to a mini radiator, typically installed in the dash or near the firewall. Heated coolant flows through core tubes while a blower fan directs warm air across these tubes and through cabin vents.
Heater systems use either manual or automatic temperature control. Manual systems require operator adjustment, while automatic systems use computerized management to maintain desired cabin temperatures, sometimes with separate driver and passenger settings.
Common heater problems include:
- Low coolant levels from leaks
- Stuck-open thermostats
- Plugged or leaking heater cores
- Non-functioning blower motors
- Faulty blend doors
