When a repair facility diagnoses low freon or refrigerant levels in your vehicle's air conditioning system, it typically indicates a leak somewhere in the system. Since refrigerant converts to a gaseous state when released from its sealed containment, locating the leak source can be challenging.
Leak detection process
The standard diagnostic approach involves adding fluorescent dye to the air conditioning system along with sufficient refrigerant to operate at full pressure. A technician then uses specialized UV light and glasses to inspect all lines, connections, and components for dye leakage. Pinhole leaks can be particularly difficult to identify due to their slow nature, and the system may need to operate for some time before leaks become visible.
Service options
Technicians may recommend either topping off the system or performing a complete evacuation and recharge:
- Top-off service: A less expensive option involving adding refrigerant to the system. However, technicians cannot precisely determine existing refrigerant levels and must estimate the correct amount. Overcharging or undercharging risks compressor damage.
- Evacuation and recharge: A more expensive but accurate procedure that removes all remaining refrigerant, air, and moisture using a recycling machine. The system is then recharged with the manufacturer's recommended amount.
Permanent fix
Neither service permanently repairs a leaking system. For lasting results, all components showing evidence of leakage must be repaired or replaced, followed by evacuation and recharge with proper refrigerant and oil quantities.
