The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is an electronic system designed to monitor the air pressure inside the pneumatic tires on your vehicle. The system reports current tire pressure information to the driver on each tire; an amber warning light will light up on your dash if there is a problem in the system, or if a tire is low.

In the U.S., TPMS technology was phased into motor vehicles beginning in 2005. By 2007, 100 percent of new-car production had the system. European vehicles reached 100 percent of production in 2012.

Does the TPMS light mean my tires are flat?

Not necessarily. The warning light activates when pressure drops roughly 25 percent below the recommended level, which can happen from a slow leak, a temperature drop of 10 degrees or more, or a faulty sensor. Check all four tires with a gauge before assuming a flat, because pressure can be low enough to be dangerous without looking visibly flat.

Do I need to reset the TPMS after inflating my tires?

On most vehicles the light extinguishes on its own once the tires are inflated to the correct pressure and you drive a short distance. If the light stays on after inflation, the system may need a manual reset, a sensor may have a dead battery, or the sensor itself may be faulty. Sensors contain batteries that typically last 5 to 10 years and cannot be replaced separately from the sensor.

Does TPMS replace regular manual tire pressure checks?

No. TPMS is a warning system, not a substitute for a monthly manual pressure check. It activates only when pressure is already significantly low. Tires can lose pressure gradually over weeks and still fall short of the optimal inflation range without triggering the light. A manual gauge check provides a precise reading and costs nothing.
