Why vehicles fail Oregon DEQ

Catalytic converter efficiency (P0420 / P0430)
The most common DEQ failure. The converter has degraded below the efficiency threshold Oregon requires. Before replacing the converter, we confirm that nothing upstream — an oil leak, a rich-running condition, a long-ignored misfire — has been destroying the old one. Replacing a converter without fixing the root cause means the new one fails within a year.
Oxygen sensor fault
Upstream and downstream oxygen sensors control the fuel mixture and monitor converter efficiency. A failed or slow sensor can cause the engine to run outside emissions limits. O2 sensor faults often accompany a failing converter — we diagnose both before recommending repairs.
EVAP system leak
The evaporative emissions (EVAP) system captures fuel vapors before they can escape into the air. Oregon DEQ tests this system. A leak — often a failed gas cap, a cracked vapor hose, or a faulty purge valve — produces a failure that is usually inexpensive to repair once the leak is located.
Readiness monitors not set
Readiness monitors are internal self-tests your vehicle's computer runs during normal driving. After a battery disconnect or a computer reset, these tests need to complete before your vehicle can pass DEQ. If DEQ turns you away for "not ready" monitors, you do not necessarily have a fault — you just need to drive specific patterns to let the monitors complete.
EGR system fault
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by recirculating a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake. A blocked EGR valve or a failed EGR position sensor is a common emissions failure on older vehicles.
Mass airflow or MAP sensor
A faulty mass airflow or manifold absolute pressure sensor causes the engine to run too rich or too lean. The resulting fuel mixture falls outside emissions limits. These sensors often fail gradually — you may notice a rough idle or poor fuel economy before the check engine light appears.
